The town of Porthleven is the most southerly port in the United Kingdom.
Historically the port has provided a much needed respite for ships braving the prevailing westerly winds and treacherous seas. The coastline is a particular black spot for shipwrecks with Loe Bar laying claim to many stricken vessels. Due to its spectacular coastal position and high ocean swells, the area has become a favourite for surfers and holidaying tourists alike. Waves regularly exceeding 2 metres break on the shallow reef that was shaped by blasting the harbour. Arguably, Porthleven's most recognisable landmark is the Bickford-Smith Institute which is next to the pier and harbour entrance. With a tower of about 70 foot in height, it has the appearance of a church but currently is used as a snooker club and houses the town council offices. Many spectacular photographs have been taken in stormy conditions showing the waves crashing into the sea wall and over the 70ft tower. Famous Porthleven people include Sir Guy Gibson of Dambusters fame, and Chris Craft who competed in the grueling Le Mans 24 hour race for over a decade. For all bookings - call (01326) 563198 |
